Ready for an unforgettable day trip to Temecula? This gem, nestled in Temecula Valley, offers breathtaking views, top-notch wine, and delicious food—all just a short drive from San Diego.
Before I moved to Southern California, I had never actually heard of Temecula. I had also never heard of Paso Robles and genuinely thought California winemaking was mostly relegated to Napa. Considering Napa is 7 hours away vs. Temecula’s 1 hour away, I was thrilled to be wrong.
I’ve visited Temecula multiple times now with my friends and family, and I can genuinely say it is totally worth the visit. The rolling hills of grapevines are even more picturesque than Napa, in my opinion, and you’ll totally get the wine country experience.
Bonus: even if you hunt high and low for cheap wine tastings in Napa, it will still be super expensive. Temecula is a much cheaper option but will still be a classic California vineyard experience. Basic Economy B approved.

How Far Is Temecula from San Diego or Los Angeles?
Temecula is conveniently close to San Diego. It’s just about 60 miles away. That’s roughly an hour’s drive, depending on traffic (which can be a little crazy in CA if you weren’t aware). So, if you can’t remember the last time you saw a gorgeous vineyard, now’s your chance.
Coming from Los Angeles? It’s a bit further—about 90 miles. That’ll take you around two hours. But don’t fret; the scenic drive through rolling hills and vineyards is pretty charming. Maybe not super charming if you’re in gridlock, but still doable! Just think of it as a wine-tasting pre-game.
In both cases, the trip is short enough to leave you with plenty of time to enjoy Temecula’s offerings. Exhausted my list of things to do in Newport Beach in Orange County? It’ll be somewhere in between the two distances at about 75 miles. So buckle up, hit the road, and prepare for a day of relaxation and indulgence.
Best Wineries in Temecula
Temecula Valley is brimming with excellent wineries. In general, Cabernet Sauvignons tend to be popular throughout California, but I personally think Temecula, in particular, shines with its sparkling wines.
Akash Winery
Akash Winery boasts some of the best views in Temecula and is one of my favorite spots. The winery features a beautiful open-air patio that attracts visitors, locals, and even bachelorette parties arriving on the wine trolley. Saturdays are for those 21 and over, so plan accordingly if you’re bringing minors on your day trip.
While Akash doesn’t have grassy areas like some other wineries, the shaded and spacious patio provides a super comfortable spot to relax for hours on end. Akash is also one of my Top 5 dog-friendly wineries in Temecula.
Akash’s wines are fantastic, earning numerous awards. They also offer a rotating selection of draft beers from their Akash Brewery and several non-alcoholic options. Wine tastings start at $30 per person, and after 5 p.m. on Saturdays, they only serve wine by the glass or bottle.
Wiens Family Cellars
Wiens Cellars is a hidden gem, offering some of the best wines in Temecula Valley. Their exterior patio is spacious, with ample seating and umbrellas for shade, and a large grassy area surrounding it. We have enjoyed low-key but lovely live acoustic music every time we’ve visited as they have it from Thursday to Sunday.
The grassy area is a great spot for families, as children are welcome any day of the week. Choose a table on the patio’s edge to take advantage of the open space. Wiens offers table service, so you can stay seated and enjoy each new pour without having to move.
Wiens also allows you to bring in outside food, which is fantastic if you want to make the most of your budget. There are two ALDI stores in Temecula where you can pick up cheese and charcuterie supplies (I’m a Basic Economy B, so of course I’m an ALDI nerd). Stock up and spend a relaxing afternoon at Wiens.
While Wiens might not have the panoramic views of Akash, it stands out for its exceptional wines. They are known for their outstanding reds, but their sparkling and sweeter wines are also worth trying. Wine tastings start at $24 for four wines or $30 for six. We’ve enjoyed their Dulce Maria, De L’Orange, and Dualis so much that we ended up buying bottles of each.
Briar Rose Winery
For a fairy-tale experience, head to Briar Rose Winery. This place looks like it’s straight out of a storybook, and it almost was, having been designed by a Disney Imagineer for his wife. The winery’s charming stone building and lush gardens make it feel magical. It was the highlight of my girls’ trip in December and remains one of my favorite Temecula wineries.
Briar Rose specializes in small-lot, handcrafted wines. The tasting room is cozy, offering a personal and laid-back experience. It’s perfect for those who appreciate both a beautiful setting and fine wine. You can do a mixed red and white wine tasting experience or just stick to one or the other.
They’ve also got an adorable boutique onsite, so no promises that you won’t leave with a new sundress, especially after having a few glasses of vino. They also host weddings and events, so this is one that’s good to arrive early in the day in case they close for a private event starting after 2 p.m. typically.
Best Wineries in Temecula for Lunch
If you’re looking to have a wine and dine experience for lunch, a lot of wineries will either allow food or have a food truck on site. The wineries below, though, are known for their food menu. I even verified these with my co-worker who has lived in Temecula for 10 years and recommends these to anyone.
Doffo Winery
Doffo Winery is not just about great wine—it’s also a great place to eat. They offer a menu full of fresh, local ingredients. Think gourmet sandwiches, crisp salads, and charcuterie boards that make you wonder why you don’t eat like this every day.
Pair your meal with one of their exquisite Temecula Valley wines, and you’ve got yourself a winning combination. The outdoor seating area is perfect for enjoying your food while soaking in the vineyard views.
Thornton Winery
Thornton Winery is another top choice for lunch. It’s a bit more upscale, with a menu that features dishes like crab cakes, roasted vegetable salads, and flatbreads. The setting is elegant, with views that are just as delicious as the food.
You’ll feel like you’re dining in a five-star restaurant, but with the added bonus of Temecula’s best wines. Thornton’s ambiance and top-notch cuisine make it a great spot for a leisurely, wine-filled lunch.
Wineries That Are Places to Stay in Temecula
If you’re planning to extend your stay and make it a weekend trip, Temecula offers some fantastic winery accommodations. Here are my favorite wineries that double up as hotels.
South Coast Winery
South Coast Winery Resort & Spa is like a luxury escape in the heart of Temecula Valley. The resort offers beautifully appointed villas and suites, all with stunning vineyard views.
The winery offers an exceptional experience with its outdoor tasting area, perfect for a relaxing afternoon. On weekends, you can enjoy live music while sipping on some of their award-winning wines. The winery features a spacious outdoor tasting bar, allowing you to stay close to your party without needing to leave anyone behind when you go inside for a pour. This makes for a more convenient and enjoyable visit.
Tastings start at $20 on weekends for five wines, with many options to choose from, including some excellent sparkling varieties. If you’re a fan of sparkling wines, the Diamante Spumante is a must-try, in my opinion. Book your stay here.
Carter Estate Winery & Resort
Basically across the street and well-located to other wineries, Carter Estate Winery & Resort is another excellent option. The resort features spacious villas with private patios and incredible vineyard views.
You can relax by the pool, enjoy a meal at their restaurant, and, of course, sample Carter Estate’s renowned wines. Staying here lets you immerse yourself in the Temecula wine experience fully. It’s like living in a wine lover’s dream. Book your relaxing stay here.
Temecula Olive Oil Company
If you need a break from wine at any point during your day, the Temecula Olive Oil Company is a delightful stop for any visitor to Temecula. When my gals and I needed an alcohol break, we went to In-N-Out since they were out-of-towners and needed to try “Animal Style” fries, but the Temecula Olive Oil Company is potentially a classier stop.
Known for its high-quality, fresh olive oils, the company features a range of flavors from classic extra virgin to infused varieties like rosemary and garlic. Guests can explore the tasting room, sample various oils, or do a tour of the estate, which is a fun and unique thing to do while you’re in the area.
I’m a bit obsessed with the TOOC, to be honest, and get quarterly shipments of their stuff. The Vanilla Date Balsamic Vinegar is a game changer. Thank me later.

Old Town Temecula
Temecula Old Town is a charming alternative to the typical Temecula day trip focused solely on wineries. This historic district offers a fabulous blend of quaint shops, eclectic restaurants, and local culture, making it a great option for a leisurely afternoon. Strolling through Old Town Temecula feels like stepping back in time, with its preserved 19th-century architecture and vintage storefronts.
If you need an afternoon coffee, definitely hit up one of the local cafes. Then browse unique boutiques offering everything from handmade jewelry to artisanal goods. The area is also home to a variety of antique shops, perfect for finding one-of-a-kind treasures. If you’re a history buff, don’t miss the Temecula Valley Museum, which provides insights into the region’s rich heritage.
If you’re looking for lunch outside of a winery, Old Town also offers a ton of dining options, from casual eateries to more upscale restaurants. Enjoy a meal on a charming patio or grab a quick bite to fuel your exploration.
Traveling from San Diego to spend one day in Temecula is the perfect way to escape and enjoy some of Southern California’s best wine. From the short drive to the charming wineries and delicious food, everything about this trip is designed to delight. Whether you’re sipping on fine wines at Akash, enjoying a downright magical experience at Briar Rose, or indulging in a gourmet lunch at Thornton, Temecula has something for everyone.
Have time for more than just a day trip? Staying at a winery resort like South Coast or Carter Estate can extend the magic of your visit, making it even more special. And if you prefer a guided experience, wine tours from San Diego offer a stress-free way to explore the region’s top spots.
