Looking for hidden gems in France? A day trip to Annecy, with its breathtaking Alpine scenery and charming canals, makes it one of the most best small villages in France that you simply must visit.

Often called the “Venice of the Alps,” Annecy is packed with charm and offers a perfect escape after spending two days in Paris. Whether you’re drawn to picturesque lake views, historic architecture, or delicious Savoyard cuisine, this town has it all.

I visited Annecy on my trip to Paris and Switzerland a couple of years ago and to date, it’s still one of my favorite places in Europe and is truly one of the most charming villages in France. Spoiler alert: an Annecy day trip from Geneva or Paris is the perfect addition to your travel itinerary.

1. Breathtaking Lake Views

First thing’s first: Annecy’s lake is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, featuring crystal-clear waters set against a dramatic alpine backdrop. Lake Annecy is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, a natural wonder that captivates people year-round. You can explore its surroundings by walking along the well-maintained path along the lake’s edge, offering panoramic views of the mountains and the charming town.

A tranquil canal lined with boats on the right side and tall green trees on both sides. The water is a calm turquoise, reflecting the greenery. In the distance, a person paddles a small boat, and a mountain with soft cloud cover looms in the background.

If you’re visiting in the warmer months, consider a boat ride, either by renting a paddle boat or hopping on a guided tour. The lake’s tranquil waters are perfect for relaxing, but they’re also ideal for water activities like swimming, kayaking, or even paddleboarding.

2. Charming Canals

If you love Venice (or love the idea of Venice), you’ll adore Annecy’s canals. The town’s nickname  of “Venice of the Alps” isn’t just for show. As you wander through the narrow streets, you’ll cross quaint bridges over tranquil canals that make you feel like you’re in Beauty and the Beast.

A view of an Annecy canal lined with colorful buildings and a church with a red-tiled roof. The turquoise water flows under a small stone bridge, with people walking along the paths next to the canal. The sky is bright and blue with scattered clouds.

The canals are a key part of Annecy’s history, originally built for irrigation and trade, and now they offer a surreal setting for exploration. The reflections of pastel-colored buildings in the clear water create a striking, photo-worthy scene. These canals are not just scenic; they’re functional too, flowing through the town and adding to its unique character. The Old Town, or Vieille Ville, is where you’ll find the most charming sections of these waterways, framed by centuries-old architecture.

Which brings us to #3…

3. The Old Town Magic

Annecy’s Old Town feels like walking through a living postcard. Its narrow, cobbled streets and pastel-colored buildings give it a timeless, medieval charm. The town’s history is visible around every corner, with centuries-old architecture blending seamlessly with modern cafes and shops.

A highlight of the Old Town is the Palais de l’Isle, a striking 12th-century building that once served as a prison. Its triangular shape, sitting in the middle of a canal, makes it one of the most photographed spots in France. Beyond its fairy-tale appearance, the Palais offers a glimpse into Annecy’s storied past.

A charming stone building with conical roofs sits in the middle of a narrow canal, surrounded by pastel-colored buildings. Cafés with red awnings line the canal, with people enjoying the sunny day. The water in the canal is a vibrant turquoise, and the sky is clear with a few clouds.

As you wander, take in the vibrant street markets, cozy courtyards, and artisanal shops that dot the area. Whether you’re a history buff or just in search of a picturesque walk, the Old Town’s charm and character make it the perfect place for leisurely exploration.

4. Delicious Savoyard Cuisine

Hungry? Annecy won’t disappoint. The town is known for its Savoyard cuisine, perfect for a hearty meal after a day of sightseeing. You can’t go wrong with fondue, raclette, or tartiflette. Fondue is all about dipping bread into melted cheese, while raclette involves scraping melted cheese over potatoes and cold meats. Tartiflette is a rich mix of potatoes, cheese, bacon, and onions.

But there’s more than just French food here. Annecy’s local markets are full of surprises. I found some of the best paella I’ve ever had from a street vendor. The town’s food scene blends local tradition with global flavors, making it a great spot for food lovers to explore. Whether you stick to classic Savoyard dishes or try something unexpected, Annecy has plenty to offer.

If you’re a serious foodie who is intent on eating your way through France, I love that for you and would recommend you invest in a traditional foodie walking tour if you have 1 day in Annecy.

5. Fun Outdoor Activities

For those that like to be a little bit active on their vacation, Annecy is a haven for you, even with just one day. Whether you enjoy cycling, hiking, or simply relaxing by the water, Annecy has something for everyone.

You can rent a bike from one of the local companies and ride along the scenic path that circles the lake, perfect for taking in the views. My sister and I rented bikes for two hours for a pretty affordable rate and had a lovely time cycling through the fields. The path was flat and well paved so it was a relatively easy ride, all things considered.

If hiking is more your style, head up to the Semnoz Plateau. It’s one of the best things to do in Annecy France. The trail offers stunning panoramic views of the town, lake, and surrounding mountains.

Looking for something that lets you cover a lot of ground in style? Annecy has several different segway tours that are a fun way to explore the city and surrounding area.

Or, grab a gelato and hang by the lake. A totally excellent option if I do say so myself.

6. Historic Château d’Annecy

For a deeper look into the area’s history, add the Château d’Annecy to your Annecy itinerary. This impressive medieval castle sits high above the town, offering not only great views but also a rich history. And a steep walk to get your heart rate up after all that raclette.

Originally the residence of the Counts of Geneva, it has been carefully restored and now serves as both a historical monument and a museum. Inside, you’ll find a variety of exhibits that cover everything from local history and art to Alpine culture. There are even aquariums to show which fish reside in the local lake, making it a top 10 museum for me personally.

A stone fortress or chateau with towers and red-tiled roofs sits under a partly cloudy sky. The building is surrounded by a stone courtyard, with a backdrop of mountains and greenery.

There’s a collection of medieval artifacts, paintings, and even contemporary art on display. The museum is well-curated, and admission is affordable (7€ for adults in high season), making it accessible for any budget and one of the best Annecy places to visit.

Even if you’re like me and not usually drawn to museums while traveling, this one is so specific to the local area and has something for everyone that’s well worth your visit.

7. Colorful Markets

Annecy’s markets offer a true taste of local life and are held multiple times throughout the week, increasing your chances of catching one. Held at the Cours de Taillefer on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, these markets are filled with fresh produce, cheeses, meats, and other regional specialties.

Vendors showcase their goods, from artisan breads to handmade crafts. It’s a great spot to sample local flavors like Reblochon or Tomme cheese, both specialties of the region. You’ll also find fresh fruits, vegetables, and other seasonal ingredients that locals use in their daily cooking.

The atmosphere is bustling and admittedly crowded, with locals and tourists alike strolling through the stalls, chatting with vendors, and enjoying the sights and smells. The market is an ideal place to pick up souvenirs—think handmade soaps, pottery, or local wines. Even if you’re not shopping, it’s worth visiting just to soak in the lively ambiance and get a sense of Annecy’s vibrant community.

8. Picturesque Parks

Annecy’s parks provide a quiet escape from the bustling market once you’ve wandered to your heart’s content. Parc Charles-Bosson and Jardins de l’Europe are two of the most popular spots for unwinding.

Parc Charles-Bosson, located by the lake, offers wide, open spaces ideal for a picnic or a relaxed afternoon with family or friends. It’s known for its well-kept lawns, shaded paths, and scenic views of the lake and mountains. You’ll see it full of locals on the weekends, particularly on sunny days.

Jardins de l’Europe, closer to the Old Town, is a beautifully landscaped garden with flowerbeds, ancient trees, and more stunning lake views. It’s perfect for a peaceful stroll, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when it’s quieter.

Both parks are great for people-watching, enjoying nature, or simply taking a break from sightseeing. With Annecy’s clean Alpine air and seriously picturesque setting, these green spaces offer a perfect balance of relaxation and natural beauty.

9. Art and Culture

Annecy has a lively arts scene that is worth exploring. Local galleries and art studios showcase the region’s creativity, offering everything from contemporary art to traditional crafts. These spaces usually have works by local artists, allowing you to dig deeper into the local culture of the area.

Throughout the year, Annecy hosts a variety of events, including art shows, music festivals, and theater performances. Events like the Annecy International Animated Film Festival held annually in the month of June draw international attention and showcase creative works from around the globe. Whether you’re interested in visiting galleries or attending a festival, Annecy offers plenty of opportunities to experience its vibrant cultural scene.

10. Easy Day Trip from Paris or Geneva

Annecy has a really accessible location compared to other charming villages in France. Annecy is just under a 4 hour direct train ride away from Paris, making it an easy day trip from the city, or a perfect place to spend the night. The journey is scenic, with beautiful views of the French countryside and Alpine mountains. It’s a convenient way to escape the city and enjoy a different side of France. Train tickets are relatively cheap too at under $40 if you book in advance.

Traveling from Geneva to Annecy for a day trip is also an easy option if you’re in Switzerland. My sister and I caught a bus from Geneva to Annecy and the ride was smooth, easy, and affordable at under $20 a person.

If you are considering staying the night in Annecy, book as early as possible because this picturesque town is a popular destination not just for international visitors, but for local Parisians and the French in general.

Here are the hotels that I would book that offer free cancellation if you change your mind:

Annecy Hostel: excellent budget option and my favorite hostel I’ve ever stayed in. We rented a private room and enjoyed the beautiful garden courtyard and bar. I would stay here again in a heartbeat and wouldn’t be surprised if it books up quickly in the summer months. Book in advance here.

Hotel du Chateau: you will not find a better location than right at the base of a medieval castle. This hotel is an affordable option that will still leave you enchanted and feeling like you’re part of a fairy tale. Book in advance here.

Hotel du Palais de I’Isle: if you want to be right in the heart of the action on the canals (without Venice prices or crowds) this is the perfect hotel. It’s charming while still being relatively affordable and is a great spot to explore the city. Book in advance here
