1. 17 Mile Drive – Enter at the Carmel Gate
The 17 Mile Drive is a capital M Must on any California itinerary. Starting your adventure at the Carmel Gate sets you on one of California’s most scenic coastal drives. Along the way, you’ll be able to make multiple stops and marvel at dramatic ocean vistas, the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Course, and spot some sea otters basking in the sun. Pro tip: Roll the windows down and let that fresh ocean air work its magic.

2. Go to Carmel Beach
This stretch of white sand is where the locals come to play and relax. Bring a picnic, dip your toes in the Pacific, and watch surfers navigate the chilly waters. Feeling adventurous? Join them—or just stick to building a sandcastle masterpiece if you left your wetsuit at home.

3. Carmel Art Walk
Art lovers, rejoice! Carmel-by-the-Sea is home to over 100 art galleries. It has one of the highest concentrations of art galleries in the country, making it a haven for art lovers .The Carmel Art Walk showcases an eclectic range of galleries, from modern art to traditional landscapes. 4. Visit the Carmel Art Association Gallery
Founded in 1927, this gallery is a cornerstone of Carmel’s vibrant art scene in my opinion. With works from over 100 local artists, you’ll find something to suit every taste—whether it’s a painting of a seascape or a sculpture inspired by the rugged coastline. It’s open daily from 10am-5pm.

5. Guided 2-Hour Walking Tour
Get the insider scoop on Carmel’s rich history with a guided walking tour. Your guide will regale you with tales of local legends, quirky architecture, and the town’s famous residents (minor spoiler alert: Clint Eastwood!). It’s a funny history lesson that will leave you appreciating the charming town more than ever. I highly recommend doing this on your first morning in Carmel. Learn more and book here!

6. Enjoy the Carmel Scenic Road Walkway
If you prefer a more leisurely stroll, the Scenic Road Walkway offers postcard-perfect views of the ocean. Wander along the coastal path, passing charming cottages and wildflower-filled meadows. Bonus points if you catch a glimpse of a dolphin pod offshore. My husband can attest; I was barely listening to him talk. I was too busy keeping my eyes on the horizon.

7. Hike Around Mission Trail Nature Preserve
Looking for some nature therapy? This peaceful 35-acre preserve offers a network of trails through native oak woodlands and serene meadows. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, wildflowers, and—if you’re lucky—a hawk soaring above. The nature setting just makes the town all the more dreamy and we loved listening to all of the birds that call the area home.

8. Electric Bike Tour
Feel the wind in your hair without breaking a sweat by cruising Carmel on an electric bike. It’s a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the town’s hilly streets and coastline. I would recommend this way of exploring the coast over driving because it’ll really let you enjoy the coastal experience. For more information and to book, click here!

9. Stop at Any of the Pet Boutiques for Furry Friend Treats
Carmel is dog heaven, and you can’t leave without treating your four-legged friend to some goodies. Whether it’s a stylish bandana like we got for our rescue pup Mr. Wallace or some admittedly overpriced organic treats, the pet boutiques here have it all. You’ll leave with a pampered pooch—and maybe some Instagram-worthy photos.

Main Street in Carmel is a shopper’s paradise, packed with unique boutiques offering everything from artisan jewelry to designer clothing. Warning: You may find yourself running out of suitcase space—but that’s what shipping is for, right?

Bonus: only if your name is Carmen. Get really confused while you window shop because every cute sweatshirt looks like it’s your name, which was relatively disorienting for this B.

12. Watch the Sunset from Carmel Point

Carmel’s labyrinth of alleys is filled with surprises, from hidden gardens to tucked-away cafes. Wander aimlessly, and who knows? You might just stumble upon your new favorite coffee spot or an artist’s studio.

14. Admire the Clinton Walker House – Frank Lloyd Wright
Architecture buffs reading a budget travel blog, this one’s for you! The Clinton Walker House is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s lesser-known masterpieces. Tucked away on the rocky coastline, it blends seamlessly with the landscape, proving once again that Wright was ahead of his time. While you can’t go inside (it was sold for $22 million in 2023), you can peek at it from afar.

15. Enjoy Fresh Seafood at Flaherty’s Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar
Seafood lovers, rejoice! Flaherty’s is known for its fresh, locally sourced seafood and is one of the best restaurants in Carmel. Whether you’re in the mood for oysters on the half shell or buttery lobster, this place delivers. If you’re like us, you’ll want to pair your meal with a crisp glass of local Chardonnay for the full experience. The Key Lime Pie is also a must. Bonus: it’s pup friendly so your dog can show off his new bandana to all the patrons.

Designed by Hugh Comstock in the early 20th century, these charming, storybook-like cottages are scattered throughout the town. Take a stroll through the residential streets to discover these whimsical homes, each with its unique design and character. Be warned, there are some serious hills in this small town; our calves got a major workout exploring these cottages.

How far is Carmel from Monterey?

Both of these charming cities are located about 2 hours from San Francisco and relatively easy to get to. They’re the perfect change of pace if you’re spending 2 days in San Francisco and then looking to get lost in a slower pace and wander through these precious cottages and explore the local wildlife.

A serene view of a garden with tall, curving trees illuminated by the warm glow of a setting sun. In the foreground, a white picket fence and vibrant purple flowers line the edge of the scene.

The distance from Carmel to Monterey is only about 4 to 5 miles (6 to 8 kilometers), depending on the route you take. It’s roughly a 10-15 minute drive between the two, making it super easy to explore both towns in one day! So here are four activities that technically are outside of Carmel by just a hop skip and jump away.

27. Go Whale Watching
Set sail from Monterey Bay for an unforgettable whale-watching adventure. Depending on the season, you might spot humpbacks, gray whales, or even blue whales—the largest animals on Earth! Don’t forget your camera, because these gentle giants love to put on a show with breaching and tail slapping. This tour is one of the most affordable options in the area.

28. Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a must-see, offering an immersive peek into the ocean’s wonders. From playful sea otters to mesmerizing jellyfish, the exhibits are world-class. Pro tip: Open daily from 10-5pm you’ll want to get there early to avoid the crowds and snag a front-row seat for the feeding frenzy in the giant kelp forest exhibit. It’s a 10/10 experience, especially if you’re looking for things to do in Carmel by the Sea with kids.

29. Do a Monterey Ghost Walking Tour
Ready for some chills with your history? This ghost walking tour of Monterey takes you through some of the city’s oldest, most haunted spots. Learn about spooky local legends, paranormal activity, and long-gone residents who may still be lurking in the shadows. It’s a thrilling way to explore Monterey’s past! Rent a kayak
and paddle your way around the peaceful waters of Monterey Bay. You’ll get a close-up view of playful and painfully adorable sea otters, lounging seals, and barking sea lions.
