I visited Annecy on my trip to Paris and Switzerland a couple of years ago and to date, it’s still one of my favorite places in Europe and is truly one of the most charming villages in France. Spoiler alert: an Annecy day trip from Geneva or Paris is the perfect addition to your travel itinerary.

Beyond its fairy-tale appearance, the Palais offers a glimpse into Annecy’s storied past.

For those that like to be a little bit active on their vacation, Annecy is a haven for you, even with just one day. Whether you enjoy cycling, hiking, or simply relaxing by the water, Annecy has something for everyone.
You can rent a bike from one of the local companies and ride along the scenic path that circles the lake, perfect for taking in the views. My sister and I rented bikes for two hours for a pretty affordable rate and had a lovely time cycling through the fields. The path was flat and well paved so it was a relatively easy ride, all things considered.
If hiking is more your style, head up to the Semnoz Plateau. It’s one of the best things to do in Annecy France. The trail offers stunning panoramic views of the town, lake, and surrounding mountains.
Looking for something that lets you cover a lot of ground in style? Annecy has several different segway tours that are a fun way to explore the city and surrounding area.
Or, grab a gelato and hang by the lake. A totally excellent option if I do say so myself.

There are even aquariums to show which fish reside in the local lake, making it a top 10 museum for me personally.
There’s a collection of medieval artifacts, paintings, and even contemporary art on display. The museum is well-curated, and admission is affordable (7€ for adults in high season), making it accessible for any budget and one of the best Annecy places to visit.
Even if you’re like me and not usually drawn to museums while traveling, this one is so specific to the local area and has something for everyone that’s well worth your visit.
7. Colorful Markets
Annecy’s markets offer a true taste of local life and are held multiple times throughout the week, increasing your chances of catching one. Held at the Cours de Taillefer on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, these markets are filled with fresh produce, cheeses, meats, and other regional specialties.
Vendors showcase their goods, from artisanal breads to handmade crafts. It’s a great spot to sample local flavors like Reblochon or Tomme cheese, both specialties of the region. You’ll also find fresh fruits, vegetables, and other seasonal ingredients that locals use in their daily cooking.
The atmosphere is bustling and admittedly crowded, with locals and tourists alike strolling through the stalls, chatting with vendors, and enjoying the sights and smells. The market is an ideal place to pick up souvenirs—think handmade soaps, pottery, or local wines. Even if you’re not shopping, it’s worth visiting just to soak in the lively ambiance and get a sense of Annecy’s vibrant community.

Annecy’s parks provide a quiet escape from the bustling market once you’ve wandered to your heart’s content. Parc Charles-Bosson and Jardins de l’Europe are two of the most popular spots for unwinding.

10. Easy Day Trip from Paris or Geneva
Annecy has a really accessible location compared to other charming villages in France. Annecy is just under a 4 hour direct train ride away from Paris, making it an easy day trip from the city, or a perfect place to spend the night. The journey is scenic, with beautiful views of the French countryside and Alpine mountains. It’s a convenient way to escape the city and enjoy a different side of France. Train tickets are relatively cheap too at under $40 if you book in advance.
Traveling from Geneva to Annecy for a day trip is also an easy option if you’re in Switzerland. My sister and I caught a bus from Geneva to Annecy and the ride was smooth, easy, and affordable at under $20 a person.
If you are considering staying the night in Annecy, book as early as possible because this picturesque town is a popular destination not just for international visitors, but for local Parisians and the French in general.
