- Hanoi to Siem Reap: If you’re fining up a week in northern Vietnam, this flight will get you to Siem Reap, the gateway to the Angkor temples. The flight duration is about 2 hours, making it ideal if your Vietnam itinerary has you mostly in northern Vietnam, visiting Halong Bay, or spending 3 days in Hanoi.

I definitely recommend booking in advance, just as you would for a domestic fligh. Bus to Cambodia – Cheapest
If you’re a fan of scenic routes and don’t mind a bit of travel time, taking a bus is a great choice. Keep in mind, this is generally nothing like the time it takes to get from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City (read: SUPER long). It’s also a more budget-friendly option compared to flying, making it ideal for people who have 2+ weeks in Southeast Asia and need to stretch their dollar.

- Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh: The bus journey on this route typically takes 6-8 hours. You’ll pass through picturesque landscapes, from the bustling city to the tranquil countryside. Again, nothing compared to the Hanoi to Saigon trek.

- Choose a Reputable Bus Company: Look for companies with good reviews to ensure a comfortable and safe journey. Use 12Go as the easiest most legitimate way to search and don’t be tempted to shave off a couple of dollars elsewhere.
- Consider Upgrading: Opt for a VIP or sleeper bus if you prefer more comfort. It can make a big difference on longer journeys. Just keep in mind that most sleeper buses do not have restrooms on board, so if you have a small bladder, you’ll really want to think through your options carefully. (No? Just me?)
Boat from Vietnam to Cambodia – Most Unique
For those seeking something different, traveling by boat is a fun, unique and leisurely way to travel between Vietnam and Cambodia. It’s definitely less common but can be an unforgettable experience.
Popular Route:
- Mekong Delta to Phnom Penh: This route takes you along the Mekong River, offering stunning views and a serene travel experience. There is wifi onboard the speedboat as well as snacks.
- If you’re in the Mekong Delta area, I would totally do this option. Unless you’re prone to motion sickness. In which case, the plane is really your only option because the bus is not going to be better.

Tour Option to Cambodia: Easiest
Tours: If you’re looking to spend just 1-2 days in Cambodia and are not interested in doing much planning, taking a 2-day organized tour from Ho Chi Minh City into Cambodia could be a great option. The following tour is super affordable and will let you see a whole new country in addition to Vietnam:
- Day 1: Depart from Ho Chi Minh City to explore the Mekong Delta, visit Vinh Trang Pagoda, take a boat trip in My Tho, and enjoy local village experiences before staying overnight in Can Tho.
- Day 2: Visit the Cai Rang Floating Market, tour a Rice Noodle Factory, and explore local markets before returning to Ho Chi Minh City. Enjoy a traditional pancake-making experience and bike ride en route, arriving in the city by around 4:00pm.
