10 Best Things to do in Shelter Cove CA

Spread the love

Nestled along Northern California’s rugged Lost Coast, Shelter Cove beckons with both adventure and relaxation. The following list of 10 things to do in Shelter Cove CA is for everyone, whether you’re drawn to its secluded beaches or eager to explore its unique attractions.

This coastal gem is well worth the visit and in fact, after my recent visit, I dare say it’s one of the best places to visit in the entire state of California.

Best Things to do in Shelter Cove

Black Sand Beach, one of the best things to do in Shelter Cove, with an overcast sky and mountains in the distance.

1. Go to Little Black Sands Beach

This black sand beach is stunning and because of Shelter Cove’s remote location, it’s possible you’ll have the place to yourself. Be very careful near the waters and never turn your back from the ocean as “Sneaker Waves” and the undertow are deadly.

Over 30 seals lying on a large gray rock in Shelter Cove with blue waters surrounding the rock.

2. Watch the Seals at Seal Pointe

I’m willing to concede that I’m so much of an aquatic nature lover that while I could do this for hours, others might be satisfied after a couple of minutes. The seals and sea lions bask on Seal Pointe, especially in the afternoon sunshine. They are hilarious to watch slide off the rocks and scoot themselves back on.

A red brewery with string lights surrounding the outdoor patio. Corn hole boards are set up in the grassy area.

3. Have a Pint at Gyppo Ale Mill, CA’s Most Remote Brewery

It may be California’s most remote brewery, but Gyppo is my favorite among all the ones I’ve been to. Great, laid-back vibes with indoor and outdoor seating and an excellent selection of their locally brewed beverages. Not a beer person? They’ve got beer cocktails and local wines by the glass or bottle. Enjoy watching the sunset over the airport strip and sea beyond.

Bonus thing to do in Shelter Cove: join the weekly “Battle of the Bags” cornhole tournament hosted on Wednesdays at Gyppo.

4. Visit the Tide Pools

Discover the natural wonders of the sea Whether you’re a kiddo or an adult, seeing sea urchins and sea stars is delightful. The tides change multiple times a day, so plan at least a few hours in advance. The Shelter Cove tide pools are near the lighthouse, and you can check the tide tables to make sure you’re visiting during low tide.

5. Play a Round of Golf

Shelter Cove is home to its very own 9-hole golf course. Bring your own clubs to the Shelter Cove golf course as this is not a usual course complete with a fully equipped pro shop. Rather, you pay your greens fees at an unmanned kiosk on the first tee box. Greens fees for 9 holes are $15, but if you’re staying for a week, you can pay $50 total for that time. Tee times are non-reservable, but you’re not likely to run into any waiting, other than for the grazing deer.

6. Get a Massage at the Day Spa

One of the more unexpected things to do in Shelter Cove, CA, is spending the day at a spa. Black Sands Bodyworks Day Spa  is open year-round and available via appointment only. Services include couples massages, Swedish or hot stone massages, and Reiki healing energy services. Perfect for unwinding or loosening your muscles after hiking.

7. Go to the Shelter Cove Farmers Market

Hosted at Gyppo Ale Mill from on Tuesdays from May through October from 11-3pm, don’t miss the chance to snag some local produce or delicious homemade baked goods. Nothing makes me feel more like a local than visiting a farmer’s market, and Shelter Cove’s market is tiny but charming.

8. Hike in the King Range National Conservation Area

The King Range NCA sprawls almost 70,000 acres and boasts some of the most remote hiking opportunities you’ll find in California. If you’re interested in camping overnight, you’ll need to reserve a permit via recreation.gov, but if you’re just hiking for the day, no permit is required. The Mount Chemise trail is moderately challenging with some great views, and the trailhead is located only a couple of minutes’ drive from the Shelter Cove General Store.

9. Do a Fishing Charter with C’Mon Sport Fishing

Spending some time at sea is one of the best things to do in Shelter Cove, California. Jared is a 3rd generation Shelter Cove fisherman. Depending on the time of year, you could be in Shelter Cove fishing for salmon, halibut, rock fish, or crab. Both half-day and full-day charters are available depending on your interest and budget. Follow him on Facebook or use the contact details on his website to get in touch.

10. Sing Karaoke at the RV Campground

On Friday nights in the warmer months from 6-9:30 pm, join other visitors and locals for karaoke. Come prepared with your best rendition of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” or any song you choose (but that particular song always kills in my experience).
